Week 4 – The Guitar

Feb 01 2010

Info

The guitar, the melody, the music, the notes, it’s a way of getting away. Flowing in a stream with no thoughts. Just me and the music.

Playing an instrument is so different from taking photos. There are analogies and similarities when it comes to artistic medium itself. However, the way of thinking, the way of transferring thoughts and emotions into medium is completely unlike.

They both come along really well inside me.

Diverse experiences, different ways of feeling and expressing. Love it:)

Tech

35mm, 1/500s, f8

For today’s shot I used only one orange-gelled strobe at 85mm from the back. You can see the flare, it was just outside the frame. The strobe wasn’t pointing on me but directly into the lens.

Trivia

  • I’ve been playing a guitar for around 8 years now. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but loving every minute of it.
  • I wanted to create a scene-like shot, although I tried different ideas during the photo-shoot.
  • I was taking photos for two days, trying different expressions and compositions.
  • Yes, the guitar was plugged in. I set the camera to take a picture every 5 seconds, then stood in front of it and started playing. Some really sweet solos came up out there;)
  • No, I don’t look like that while playing everyday, heh…

Other Shots

I had a big problem choosing the photo for today. I took many on Saturday and even more on Sunday. Been thinking whole day long today of which one to show. I decided to go with the one-light shot, where I’m not actually playing, only holding the guitar.

It isn’t perfect, if I wasn’t a model at same time I would probably notice a few flaws. I think I will install a big mirror in my future studio, the one like those you can see in ballet classes. Would be fun:)
