Week 20 – Out of the Blue
Info
Sometimes some things just happen, out of the blue. You haven’t planed them nor you thought they could happen. You wake up one morning to find a completely new world.
You get to know someone, you read something that makes you think, you see a photo that just can’t be ignored.
And suddenly everything seems a bit different, slightly changed, in different colors…
Tech
I used a prime, fast lens to get some ambient light. Then added a big white panel with a strobe for a fill, set at 1/8th power and 24mm.
50mm, 1/500s, f1.8, ISO 200
Second light was behind me, just above to create a soft flare. Used blue gel for a bit of color. Set at 1/16th power and 85mm.
Trivia
- Every now and then I have that idea for a photo that just doesn’t suit anything I’ve done so far. That’s one of those ideas. It wasn’t inspired (as far as my brain is concerned). I just looked at the gravel and saw this in my mind.
- The gravel comes from one of flower pots. The plant died (I think) and I could use the gravel.
- The pot is made of glass so that the gravel looks great in it. I will put it back in there but leave it without any plant as I want it to stay clean.
- I took this shot in my room. You don’t need too much space for such photos really. The flare and very shallow depth of field usually makes the background completely unrecognizable.
- It rains… like almost all the time. I need a few really warm days finally. I want sun…
Other shots
The first one shows how important the post-processing is. Just changing the contrast and making it monochromatic completely changes the mood:
And one more blue photo:
Take care guys!

Can’t believe you shot this in your room. I love the lighting and the tones!
Thanks Carmi! Yea, this shot didn’t need much space;) The back light was only 2 meter behind, so basically 3 meters should be enough to pull this off.
