Week 14 – The Forest

Apr 18 2010

Info

The Forest… or rather what is left of it… The sad landscape with a sword, as one could name it.

Do you see the little sword? I haven’t hurt any of those trees, don’t worry. Sword was used to make it even more strange (like if the background wasn’t sad enough…).

I love forests, I love nature as a whole. That’s why I’m always a bit depressed after seeing bare snags. Or more precisely: the forest of bare snags…

As I drove around Koszalin and found that place, I just knew I have to take a photo there, so here it is. Driving around through the landscape of my hometown made me vary aware of it’s changes. I notice new holes in the road, cut down trees or burnt fields.

But the above is beyond any previous changes. There used to be trees there. I don’t know bout you, but I hate such views. Cutting down whole parts of a forest is just exactly opposite of sustainability principles. In Scandinavia they allow to cut down a number of trees per hectare (depends on forests type) and leave the rest. This way the forest easily obtains it’s balance and spreads. I’m not gonna deepen too much into this subject, I bet Ptaku would explain it much better than me.

Tech

This photo is fairly simple, however, I used one strobe to brighten up my face a bit. The sun is highlighting my hair from the left while the strobe at 1/2th of it’s power (SB-24), 85mm, gelled orange was set on the right.

Sun was quite strong so I shot at 1/500th and f8.

I was planing a bit different look so I took the shot with tungsten white balance making the background blueish. Though there is not much blue left in here;)

I used a bit wider perspective than I’m used to, 28mm made it possible to have lots in focus showing details in that sad landscape.

Other Shots

While I was preparing the set, a few gooses flew over my head.

Someone burnt down high grasses growing round the banks.

Anyway, as always, tell me what you guys think. Take care!
