How iPhone Changed the Way I Think, pt 1

Sep 06 2009

iPhone… the phone, the camera, the organizer, the game console, the web browser and more. It’s incredible how much something so small can store. It’s especially incredible if you were using simplest mobile for last few years and suddenly you realize how easier your life is by using a smart phone.

If you wish, it could work just like an ordinary phone, however, spending a bit time to incorporate iPhone into your everyday duties and activities can make it a real time saver.

Today, I would like to show you a few, completely free apps that I use almost everyday.

Social Media

  • 1. Skype. I think I don’t have to introduce any of you to free calling over the net. However with iPhone, whenever I have wifi connection, I can call or chat with friends for free. The battery life is another story…
  • 2. Facebook. Personally I don’t use facebook for live chat but as an mail and information sharing engine. As I wouldn’t post links through iPhone, I would definitely want to check messages and update my profile if something important happened.
  • 3. Twitterfon. There are so many twitter applications that it’s hard to keep up. Twitterfon is probably not the best choice if you need all available options but I value it for it’s ease of use.

Photo apps

  • 4. Mill Colour. Easy to use color editing software with a few really interesting presets. Best thing is that you can then check exact settings that each preset gives and alter them to your taste. You can set it up from scratch as well. 90% of times it’s all I need for my iPhone photos.
  • 5. PhotoCurves. What the name suggest, these are full RGB curves.
  • 6. Photofilters. I use it more for fun and to check “how would it change that photo” but it still can be useful. I wouldn’t recommend using the lightness slider, better just save the altered file and use curves afterwards. Actually I often used it’s black/white option and then alter image with simple S curve.

Learning

  • 7. Study Flash. It’s the best free learning tool I have found for iPhone so far. Basically it creates cards with two sides, f.ex. one side with a question, second with an answer. Interface is super easy and you can literally create hundreds of sets with hundreds of cards each. If only I had that a few years ago!
  • 8. Spanish LE. I don’t know a word in Spanish so the lite version is all I need for now. It’s got lists of most useful words and phrases plus recordings of everything so you can learn pronunciation.

Games

  • 9. Sudoku. Making the brain think a bit is never a bad idea and sudoku is the easiest way to think a bit in your spare time.
  • 10. Boxed In. Another thinking game, this time you have to move boxes around the map to find a way out. It has all the mobile game needs, it’s fun, makes you think and doesn’t require too much time for each level.
  • 11. Dactyl. Last but not least, all you have to do is click on red bombs fast enough that they don’t explode. You need to be accurate as well as clicking on background looses game. Cool thing to train your fingers speed and dexterity.

Type those names in iTunes apps store and it should easily find them. I hope they will be any useful for you, guys. I have more thoughts about using a smart phone (or mobile computer as I tend to call it) and should write about them next week.

    Nice observations.

As far as iPhone related stuff goes, this blog might be of some use: http://terrywhite.com/techblog/

Terry is a "photographer," but I think he's more of a photoshop nut, mainly because he isn't that good of a photographer.

  • Marcin Retecki

Yea, Terry is a real tech geek and often has newest photo gadgets reviewed. He also wrote a few books bout iPhone under Scott Kelby "brand", I haven't read them though.
