RED Scarlet
It’s past 3 am here but this big news are worth staying up late! RED is a company that will shake both still and motion picture’s business. They have introduced two new, fully modular systems: Scarlet and Epic which are completely compatible. They call it DSMC which means digital stills and motion camera.
First of all these systems have more parts than you can ever need. Camera’s “brainz” vary from 4,9 to 261 MP! Biggest Epic’s sensor has 186 x 56 mm creating 25 fps of 28000 x 9334 pixels size!
There are 8 different sensors. Smallest Scarlet can give us 120 fps power to shoot even fastest movement and then show it in slow motion with ease. Two smaller Epics give 100 fps with 13 or 24 MP.
But wait, it’s just a beginning! Both Scarlet and Epic come with different types of mounts so you can use your best Nikon or Canon lenses. Need speed? use F/1.2 Canons, need super wide with best ever performance? Use 14-24 F/2.8 Nikkor. That’s never been simpler. Not mentioning Zeiss.. I guess pros will get wild with this stuff!
As I said whole system is completely modular. You can see some neat accessories on the picture or go to RED website to read a bit more. Remember it’s still not released so most info is not reviewed yet.
Prices can be a bit scary to any amateur but comparing to other equipment of that class, this stuff is relatively cheap. Check the table below:
This is a big step in both motion and still technology. Nikon and Canon will have to thing through their strategies and come up with an answer to this baby. Nowadays new technologies become old really fast, price tag will go down in a year or two. I predict that in 5 years this will be standard to any serious motion/still artist or other shooter. Thats the way things happen now. If “big” camera corps won’t introduce something similar soon, their stuff will get useless for pros. They will still give us best lenses but who will think about 12 MP 9fps Nikon bodies when 24 MP with 100 fps is right here!
